Cycling Day of Inclusion at Creggs RFC Galway

This week, the Variety Ireland Inclusion Cycling West Mobile Unit checked in for a fabulous morning of cycling at Creggs Rugby Club in Galway. It was a truly inspiring event that brought together children of all ages and abilities to celebrate inclusion, community spirit, and the joy of cycling.

Organised by Variety Ireland, our partners at Comotion and Creggs Rugby Club, the day highlighted the importance of accessibility in sports and recreation while creating a fun and welcoming environment for everyone involved.
The event attracted a large number of primary school children from across Galway and Roscommon, along with local volunteers and carers, where participants had the opportunity to experience a range of adapted bicycles and tricycles specially designed for people with physical and intellectual disabilities.
These included wheelchair bikes, tandem bikes, trikes, and specially modified bicycles that allowed individuals with mobility challenges to enjoy cycling safely and confidently. For many participants, it was their first time experiencing the freedom and excitement of riding a bike independently.
One of the most heart-warming aspects of the warm day in Galway was the sense of inclusion and encouragement shared among everyone present. Volunteers and organisers from Creggs Rugby Club worked tirelessly to ensure every participant felt comfortable and supported.
Experienced instructors and helpers guided cyclists through the activities, offering assistance and building confidence. Families were delighted to see their children smiling, laughing, and taking part in an activity that is often inaccessible without specialised equipment and support.
The atmosphere throughout the day was energetic and positive. Creggs Rugby Club provided an excellent venue with plenty of open space for cycling activities and social interaction.
Variety Ireland with the support of our partners at the HSE, The Department of Children, Disability and Equality and The Department of Transport continue our dedicated mission to
improve the lives of children with disabilities, and events like this play a vital role in raising awareness about the barriers many people still face in accessing sport and recreation.
Cycling is not only a healthy physical activity but also a source of independence, confidence, and social inclusion. By providing adapted bikes and opportunities for participation, Variety Ireland helps break down those barriers and gives individuals the chance to experience the physical and emotional benefits of cycling.
The Inclusive Cycling Day also highlighted the power of volunteers and community organisations working together. Local supporters contributed their time and effort to ensure the success of the event. Their dedication demonstrated the strong community spirit that exists in Galway and the importance of supporting inclusive initiatives.
Overall, the Variety Ireland Disability Cycling Day at Creggs Rugby Club was a memorable and meaningful occasion. It showed how cycling can unite people, promote equality, and create opportunities for everyone regardless of ability. The smiles on participants’ faces and the positive atmosphere throughout the event reflected the success of the day and the impact that inclusive community events can have. It was a wonderful reminder that everyone deserves the opportunity to participate, belong, and enjoy the simple pleasure of cycling.
Variety Ireland would like to thank all the members of staff and volunteers at Creggs Rugby Club for looking after our team on the day and facilitating should an amazing morning of inclusive cycling for children!
