Promoting Equal Access to Education

Promoting Equal Access to Education

In 2021, Variety – the Children’s Charity of Ireland teamed up with ESB Energy for Generations Fund and our charity ambassador, Pamela Uba, for an initiative to provide iPads to children living in direct provision across the West of Ireland.

Variety Ireland’s “Equal Educational Access for Immigrants” programme, which was co-funded by ESB Energy for Generations Fund, saw Pamela Uba deliver upcycled iPads to children in three direct provision centres.

These iPads were provided to help children access learning from outside of the classroom. With the help of ESB Energy for Generations Fund and Pamela Uba, Variety – the Children’s Charity of Ireland were able to deliver upcycled iPads to children who have put them to good use with both their educational and social communication needs.

As part of Variety Ireland’s own environmental and sustainability policy, all iPads supplied were upcycled. Every iPad we supplied was upcycled, saving 69kg* of carbon per unit supplied. This initiative not only offered all children in each centre with the chance to advance their educational skills, but also ensured that it was done in the most environmentally and sustainable way possible.

Just See The Impact!

“On behalf of all the children and staff at Carraig Accommodation Centre, I would like to express my deepest thanks and appreciation to Pamela Uba, ESB Energy for Generations Fund and Variety Ireland for organising iPads for use by children at our centre. The iPads that were donated to the children at our centre have been of great benefit to the children as they help with their homework and outside school educational needs .At weekends, they come to the meeting room in the centre to play games and communicate with their friends. We are so grateful that our centre was chosen for these wonderful gifts which continue to be of great benefit to our children in helping with their educational and personal well-being. A fantastic initiative to help our wonderful children. A big thank you to you all.”

“I would like to forward a huge thank you to Pamela Uba, ESB Energy for Generations Fund and Variety Ireland from all the children here at AbbeyField Resettlement and Orientation Centre in Ballaghaderreen, Co Roscommon. We are so
grateful for your generous donation and want you to know how much we appreciate your support. The iPads that were gifted are being used by our Syrian and Afghan children daily as a tool in their English classes here at the Centre but
also for after school arts and crafts. Your generosity is what gives these young people the resources and support they need and opens doors for their future in Ireland.
You truly make a difference!”

“Dear Variety – the Children’s Charity of Ireland,
I would like to thank both yourselves, your ambassador Pamela Uba, and ESB Energy for Generations Fund for supplying iPads to the children at the Eglinton Direct Provision centre here in Salthill, Galway City as part of your “Equal Educational Access for Immigrants” living in the West of Ireland. This wonderful initiative has presented our children so many opportunities to help them with their educational and social needs.
Our children living in direct provision use these iPads for homework after school and also communicate with the outside world. The benefits of having these iPads is quite amazing and have lifted the sprits of these wonderful children. This
has presented them with equal access to online education outside of the classroom to help them advance with their studies. What a wonderful initiative that will continue to benefit so many children living under direct provision in our centre. A huge thank you from the children and staff at our centre.“
