Variety – the Children’s Charity of Ireland are delighted to announce the launch of Europe’s first automated children’s disability cycling hub.
This automated disability cycling hub is situated at the entrance to The Great Western Greenway at The Mulranny Park Hotel, in Westport, Co Mayo was officially opened by Minister of Finance Jack Chambers, Minister of State for Trade Promotion, Digital and Company Regulation, Dara Calleary on Saturday 12th October 2024. Also in attendance on the day to show their support for this wonderful initiative were Minister of State at the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage Alan Dillon, Senator Lisa Chambers, Deputy Michael Ring and Cllr Paul McNamara.
This self-automated disability cycling hub includes a range of special disability mobility trikes that cater for children aged from 5-18 years. Each trike is fitted with the latest in digital technology where parents or guardians of children with mobility issues can hire a trike 365 days of the year at the Steed App which is available for free download at Google Play and Apple Store.
Commenting on the launch, Minister Jack Chambers said” This is a special day for children with mobility issues planning to visit The Western Greenway in Co Mayo. It provides support and inclusion for children with disabilities so they can be included in cycling activities with family and friends while cycling the greenway. Being the first Greenway Children’s Disability Cycling Hub in Europe shows the government’s continued commitment to providing equal access to cycling for children with disabilities. It’s great for the local community and tourists visiting The Western Greenway who now have the first designated children’s disability cycling hub on a greenway in Ireland that accommodates children with disabilities. Families get to enjoy all the beautiful scenery that The Great Western Greenway has to offer while creating so many wonderful memories together.”

Thanks to the kind support of Minister Chambers, Minister Calleary and The Department of Transport we were able to secure joint funding for this initiative. General Manager at Mulranny Park Hotel, Dermot Madigan worked closely with the charity to kindly donate the space for the hub.
The Great Western Greenway is one of the busiest and most picturesque greenways in Europe and it was the obvious choice to install our first Children’s Disability Cycling Hub at Mulranny Park Hotel, Westport, Co Mayo.
Families with children with mobility issues can now reserve a special mobility trike ahead of their visit to The Great Western Greenway in Westport by app. Families can also hire traditional bikes from Seabreeze Bike Hire which is adjacent to the disability cycling hub.
Our Greenway Children’s Disability Cycling Hub supports inclusion for children with mobility issues and means that all the family can cycle and explore the beautiful Great Western Greenway in Co Mayo.
