WILL LAUNCH A Wheelchair Accessible SWING

Fri. 11th OCT. – St. Michael’s House Special School, Baldoyle, Dublin 13.

This Friday, 11th October 2013 @ 11.00am Variety, the Children’s Charity will present a Special Wheelchair Accessible Liberty Swing to St. Michaels House Special School, Baldoyle.   The Liberty Swing will be unveiled on the day by Kamal Ibrahim and is co-sponsored by both Derek O’Neill’s SQ Foundation Worldwide and UPS Ireland.   St. Michael’s House Special School, Baldoyle caters for pupils with severe to profound learning disabilities and associated difficulties.

How many of us take for granted that we can go with our child to the playground and go on the swing, however for many children that is not always possible.

The Liberty Swing has been designed to allow wheelchair bound children the opportunity to experience the joy of swinging afforded to their able bodied friends and siblings. The Liberty Swing is the only swing of its type that is fully lockable and allows for real swinging, not just rocking back and forth.

Most children with disability don’t ever experience a sense of movement and freedom. They either live in wheelchairs or they play their sport or recreation in chairs.  They often don’t get to live in the world like the rest of us.   Variety, the Children’s Charity has placed other swings in special needs schools and playgrounds across Ireland, which have brought joy and excitement into the lives of many disabled children.

No more sitting on the sidelines wondering what it’s like to fly through the air feeling the wind in your face. They don’t have to watch from the sidelines and think “I wish I could do that too”.  These children’s faces light up once they are on the swing.

The Liberty Swing is presented by Variety, the Children’s Charity, a voluntary organisation helping sick, disabled and disadvantaged children in Ireland since 1951.  Formed in 1951, Variety Ireland has made a real difference to children’s lives throughout Ireland. There are never enough resources to answer every appeal, but thanks to ongoing and generous support, Variety Ireland has been able to spend almost 60 years helping where help is needed.
